Possum

Nocturnal pestilence, thy name is possum. NO - DO NOT think Awww Cute😤 ( borrowed image) Most New Zealanders have probably never seen a live possum despite the population of the wee beasties on these isles (estimated at 30 million, down from around 70 million in the 1980s). They will however have seen possums squashed on roads all over the country. Dazzled. Frozen in the headlights. The population of possums is getting smarter; the stupid ones are getting eliminated. My grandmother, a grower of prize winning roses, hated possums with a passion. Possums love the taste of young rose shoots - passionately. Grandma had a cage trap, but hate the rose vandals as ahe did, she still had to call on someone else to despatch the stupid ones that fell for the bait. ( not my Grandma ) Traps are getting smarter too; and considerably more expensive, but they are of such clever design these days that they despatch the possum, drop it on the ground and reset themselves. Baking Repost - Mum's Birthday

Today would have been my mother's birthday, so to honour her memory I am reposting this 2012 post of her bacon and egg pie - a firm favorite with the whole family. Even in the lean times we had pigs and chickens (and our neighbour grew peas which he invited us to help ourselves to before harvest. It was exchange for using our old style hay mower to cut the pea plants for harvesting) so there was always something to make this pie out of. Mum's biggest concern was always the cost of the butter to make the pastry! Mum's Bacon and Egg Pie Bacon & Egg Pie is picnic food tradition in our family. Willing Vector

Every day at the end of our walk Scully gets a good rub over with an old towel because if she hasn't jumped in a stream or the sea, she has run through the bush and become dew or rainwater soaked. Following that and a drink of water we start the process of plucking all the hook grass seeds out of her hairs - they seem to get most stuck on her face. She pokes her nose into things. Hook grass (strictly speaking a sedge) - Carex Uncinata Posing for photos improving slightly It's the bane of trampers/ramblers/trail hikers lives. The tiny hooks are designed to grab feathers on ground dwelling birds and be carried about for dispersal. Indiscriminately the clever things make the most of animal fur, human leg hairs and any bristly fabrics or wooly socks that brush past them. Close Up - Nature Friday

Eensy Teensy teeny tiny mushrooms. Smaller than a peppercorn but such pretty colours. Bit out of focus - had nothing but my specs to use for perspective🙄 These guys also have shades of lavender but that might just be their maturing process changing their colour. Fun little fan-shaped guys Cute tiny ears.

Ennui

F tells me I should learn to knit. Bah humbug. On Tuesday it rained all day and I spent most of it wrapped in my gold blanket - like a big pasty (I like my head covered too) venting occasional louds sighs. F scoots me over. I shuffle back. I maintain contact even if her elbows are constantly in motion. Reading is better because she can do that with one hand and rub my tummy with the other. Being a big pasty doesn't elicit treats like going for a walk does. Since the 'dog' incidents we have been walking on the steep track that circles round the uphill side of the housing here. It's slippy for humans at the best of times (I'm constantly having to check her progress, especially in downhill mode) but in rain it is probably treacherous for two legs upright. She should use her front legs but I admit they are useful for dispensing treats. As I have been practicing posing for photos here are some pictures from our last walk up the hill track.
