wandering along the the street in Castle Douglas I spotted, in an 'interiors' shop, this cushion with the very arty cockerel appliqued onto woollen tweeds. The shop was closed (it was about 0730 in the morning and I had been on a hunter/gatherer trip to a bakery) so it and it's running mates had to be photographed from outside the plate glass. More examples could be seen in the depth of the darkened shop. They really appealed to the fabric scraper in me. I used to do a lot of machine applique but never achieved that standard. I have however been inspired.... I have just read a book (called Jellyfish Dreaming) written by a friend and clicked these to send the image to her. Like much art I see I love the colour, admire the ideas and the skills, the use of materials, but I wouldn't buy one - besides I think they look best en masse.

Threave

They had such descriptive names in older times. If you had a descriptive added to your name by which you would be forever known what would it be? I'd be Fred the Frivolous. The castle and its island are part of a Scottish National Trust nature reserve. Some wood carver who knows their creatures has contributed two bench seats along the path from the park-up to the boat jetty. Buzzard and otter Kingfisher and heron Kite, owl, red squirrel and badger Woodpecker and deer Bench in the nature reserve. Boat jetty en route to Threave Castle On a morning that was calmer than calm we visited the ruins of Threave Castle. A short boat trip to the island in the river Dee (not the same River Dee that Nobby and Gail know. I am advised by a local of Dumfries, that Nobby's river is The Royal Dee.) Chasing Rain

Windermere. On Wednesday we finally set off northward at last. No plans had been made other than to chase the red point on the compass needle. Purple fat clouds gathered in scowling banks that pushed and shoved their way across the heavens and frequently opened their doors and dumped water in great cascading waterfalls. Whether they were chasing us, or we chasing them will forever remain open to debate, but there were times when it was virtually impossible to see the road. Mr B (very sensibly) backed off speed but it never ceases to amaze me that there were vehicles that raced on in an overwhelming cloud of spray and flying spumes of water. Such confidence. Late in the day I found us a place to stay in Windermere. A real bed. We paid more per person to go camping (in our own tent) on the South Coast in summertime, so relatively good value. Freezer Jam

I have been working on emptying the freezer. Quince, blackberry and rhubarb jam in the making. There are now about 2 dozen such sealed jars in my cupboard with a variety of jams, all blackberry coloured (10 kg of blackberries goes a long way). I gave a dozen or more jars away to colleagues before I finished work. Parting gifts. What can I do with the remaining couple of kilos? Sauce? Chutney/Pickle? (Is there even such a thing as blackberry chutney?) Green tomatoes next.

Patterns

Small things amuse bored minds. When I chuck a few suet pellets on the lawn each morning for the crows and magpies (and Bernard the seagull), it amuses me to shake them around on the lid of the tub before I throw them. I imagine patterns in the random alignments they form.
