Mantiques.

Bro has a habit of buying mantiques as he terms them. His passion is for anything that looks as though it was a tool for something. We have all studied at least one thing he bought simply because no one knew what it was for. The walls of the workshop are decorated with a wide assortment of (now redundant) wood working, metal working, automotive type hand tools. If you have any educated guesses what this is suggestions will be passed on to him. Having been on an 8 year drive to reduce our possessions to only those things we use I have diverted a large assortment of domestic tools (cream skimmers, irons that are heated on the stove, boot lasts, assorted canning gear, brass jam pans, old hanging scales sets, cast iron bakeware... and so on) to second hand shops, freecycle and charities. What I have sought to OBTAIN is an effective and efficient manual coffee grinder. My head was turned last Sunday in Havelock as I walked past Mills Mussels. (This is not an advert - you can buy ...

Hijacked

Mum wants to hijack my blog to publish a knitting pattern she has designed and written. I shouldn't let her do it but she isn't very tech savvy and she doesn't know how else to link it to her Ravelry account. She no longer has a blog of her own (deleted her old email address and locked herself out of the blog - stupid woman - but you can see the remnants of it here Mum's Baking Blog ) I'm making this as difficult as possible for her - sleeping with my face on the lefthand end of her keyboard. She has SHIFT and CTL on the other end but I have control of the letter A and my chin on the Caps Lock. She is very persistent, but she still hasn't worked out how to make it into a downloadable .pdf ( edit - oh yes she has Mr T -a lot can happen in 24 hours!) Oh alright then put it here but I disown the content from here on (unless there is money for catfood in it.......) pattern as .pdf file Koko Jacket and Hat Materials: 2 skeins Lanas Stop Norman...

Baking Repost - Mocha Brownie

No 47 - Mocha Brownie Ok - not the most enticing photo but I never claimed to be a photographer - serious defect in my blogging attempts. It was however moist, dense, chocolatey and well coffee flavoured (I don't think coffee-ey works as a word or a concept). I do like coffee-chocolate and so, it seems, do my work colleagues. (And it is much darker on the inside than it is on top.) Mocha Brownie 6 oz butter 5 oz unsweetened dark chocolate (70%+ cocoa) 2 c sugar 1 Tb coffee (expresso powder or instant coffee powder/granules) 1 tsp vanilla 4 large eggs 1 c flour 3/4 c choc chips Line a 15" x 10" tin (about 1" deep) with foil (and leave some overhang to use as handles for getting it out of the tin later) and grease it all very well with a tablespoon of butter. Then pre-heat your oven to 170-180 degrees C. Melt the rest of the butter and the chocolate in the microwave (or in a bowl over boiling water). Whisk in the sugar, the cof...

This is Havelock.

Population about 600 (people) A town where someone puts fresh flowers in the public toilets A town where you can stand in the middle of the main street at rush hour. Self styled Greenshell Mussel capital of the world, there is a lot of mussel themed decor... engraved into the concrete sidewalks... Adorning various buildings... ....including the police station.... Nice to think even the police have a sense of humour (or are invested in local identity). Real greeshell mussels for sale in the grocery shop This town has two pubs ...and one grocery store.... (Priorities.🤔) ....a museum (every town in NZ has one of those - most are devoted to 'Early Settlers')... ...and a variey of dwellings from early settlers to architectural modern I'll leave you with a couple more shots from the main street, the Town Hall and the fishing tackle shop

Paying Rent with Usefulness

Well that's the plan - reality may be a diversion from the plan. This kind of follows on from posts about van reconstruction but my train of thought was interrupted by trips to the north end of the island. Days in the workshop end about 1800 depending on the heat in the day. Van and bikes aside I have tried to be useful to everyone whose life is disrupted by me being here longer than your average guest. I started out sharing prep of evening meals but it morphed - these days I do about 6 meals a week when I'm here. About half of the time there will be an 'extra'. There is a kind of open house policy that feeds anyone who is here at meal times. Halal is observed about half the time. Vegetarian options are always available. After dinner the k9s join us for a leisurely stroll to ensure the chooks have all gone to roost and shut the door on their house. Chooks here recognize 'the red bucket' and and stragglers can be easily enticed in by waving the scrap bucket ab...
