Peasgood's Nonsuch

On our return from Chathams we had a day at Bro's place to sort out the transport of Mr B’s motorbike. Bro has an extensive garden and orchard from which I scavenged a bucketful of Black Doris plums (still clinging right at the top of the tree). I'd no sooner stowed those in the van when Bro pointed out the tree of cooking apples and said "take those with you. I still have some in jars from a couple of years ago." Peasgood's Nonsuch They are huge. Fortunately it's a small tree and birds had feasted on a few fruits so I only had 15 or so to carry away. They turn to fluff when heated gently. I have stowed most of the fluff in yoghurt pots in the freezer - to use in my porridge over winter - and put a few apples, with some of the excess ripe tomatoes we returned to, into a chutney. Bro also unloaded a 45 litre bag of walnuts (in shell) and 60 litres of hazelnuts (also unshelled) onto us. They were last year's harvest. No one at his home fancies the task of ...

Nature Friday

Sunshine changes things. I fell out of love with Blogger for a while. Deep breath in. I missed the interaction, the windows on other worlds Life here seems to have become very small. All focus is on the house build. Today some of the house roof is going on. The seasons have turned a corner. Orion appears in our night sky again - above our sunrise horizon just before the sky lights up. As we advance on this turn around the sun, Orion will start each night higher in the sky than on the previous until his final appearance on our sunset horizon heralds the onset of another Winter. Walking back from the jetty last week we were assailed by a strong scent. I traced it to a flowering acacia

Moth Coloured

I pointed it out while F was watering the plants. She is so clumsy she might have stepped on it. (Her Mum wouldn't let her go to dance lessons when she was a kid - called her the 'fairy elephant' - but F realized in later years it was a function of economics rather than a belief that F couldn't dance. F can't dance (she sort of wobbles, I know because we do a lot of it), but that is beside the point really.) This is meant to be a nature Friday post, but this week has fried our brains and we aren't really prepared for anything. So you get a moth - and a picture of me supervising work from home. Me and that moth have colours from the same palette. I reckon it's Tigger-coloured.

Work in Progress

Stocktaking was not necessary to know I have a pile of unfinished projects lying about. Today I made a start on the colourful Crazy Cats patchwork. The first two are drapped on the back of the sofa waiting to be given names (and eyes). There will be 12 in all and name suggestions (or breed descriptions) are invited as it progresses. I'm on a third start on a knitted pullover for me. First start: nice pattern but wrong colour, unsuitable colour. Unpicked half a front and made a second start using a tunic style pattern I've made before. Knitted the whole back before I realized I had adapted the pattern the first time round (to make it look less like a maternity smock) and this new one was too wide. Unpicked all that.... This is the train commuting (and some evenings by the fire) project... and am now halfway up the back 🙄 again. Yesterday a parcel arrived at the door; wool to knit a Nordic cardigan for a colleague. Having heard I'm planning my escape from work she decided s...
