Nature Friday

Korokia This week some unusual flowers for Rosie over at LLB. (There's a Rosie (she looks like a greyish version of you Rosie) who visits our bay from time to time. She plays zoomies with Scully.) Cute Knowing wink😜 Broom Grevillea ornamental Manuka back to Grevilleas - untidy looking plants but deer and goats don't eat them so they are popular around here Back in the garden - we have one (ONE) hazelnut

Friday

Last Friday I drove to Nelson. It was the occasion of my final exam to qualify as a Pilates teacher. On any trip to town we always take the opportunity to do the laundry - so I did that. Next to the laundromat a dry-cleaners and industrial laundry was selling second-hand boilersuits for $10 (or 3 pairs for $20). I got 3 pairs and discovered today that I was only charged $10.20 How did I not notice that when I swiped? They are of some sort of light synthetic stuff (I prefer heavy cotton drill for working in), ex dairy factory judging by the branding. They'll do for carrying around in the truck to keep the town clothes clean if I'm loading compost or horse poo or... you get the idea. Coming home I over-heated my rattly-van engine and stopped on the roadside. The coolant seems to have dispersed out a 'hole' somewhere on the underneath side of the radiator or one of the hoses. The newly purchased black overalls came in handy for inspecting but I couldn't fix the proble...

Visitors

Mr B is in Singapore this week and I have just had a three day visit by a friend from NZ as well. Yesterday I dragged Mr B off to the wetland reserve at Sungei Buloh and got the full wildlife experience (like the big 5 on safari). Crocodile Never smile at a crocodile. Mr B was just commenting the the croc didn't have a handbag when I decided to grin at the croc anyway. I did start just at little when the croc chose that instant to whip round roaring, open-mouthed.... This monster croc had some weirdness going on with its tail. It was a stump about 2-3 feet long and fat fat fat - blown up like a balloon or flotation device on his rear end. When he roared it was at a young croc that had invaded his space. He cruised out into the water then did that casual sinking below the surface thing that crocs do, only to be given away by his floating rear extension. A generally fat all over croc....he even had rolls of flesh where his neck should be. It makes him look like he has beagle e...

Holding the World in Place (Eulogy)

Tigger held our world in place. We used to chuckle about the 'you may kiss my paw' pose he favoured when relaxing. He held the garage window in place while he slept on the workbench. He held the cover on the airbag if riding in the front seat of the van (F did used to wonder if this would kill them both). He held down arms, and legs, corners of blankets, newspapers, pieces of sewing, floor mats. He would lie on one thing and extend an arm (usually his right) and hold down something else. He held our hearts. We are bereft. So is everyone who loses a member of their family. What can I say about Tigger to those who knew him only in late life? Tigger was the gentlest of souls, calm, possibly a very zen Buddist, but never timid. He never fought but he never ran away either. On the occasions we did see confrontation he seemed to be calmly encouraging the other away; maybe he had total trust that his 'army' was there to back him up. (We always did, but tried to keep it as c...

Hunter-Gatherer

Well the water tank is full again. I keep meaning to test the water and dose it with water purifying stuff if necessary. However, so much fresh water runs in and overspills everytime it rains the dose would be diluted within a day or two. That dosing stuff is not cheap. Nothing is cheap these days. Fresh air and sunshine are still free; walking in the hills and along the foreshore, paddling the kayak and swimming, going for a bike ride, ... the gear (like kayaks, bikes and hiking boots) is not cheap. My walking shoes are disassembling themselves. I went to a well respected store that sells equipment to outdoorsy folk. New boots could cost me from about $500 to $900 (NZ). Ouch. They are boots to get muddy, not for the Milan fashion week catwalk. Furthermore I'd bet a week's income they are glued not stitched even at that price. Those silly bits of sole that curl up the front of the toes have a nasty habit of uncurling themselves and refusing to be glued back in place. R...
