Chertsey Book Barn

Part of the joy of travelling back to Mid-Canterbury is the opportunity to call at the Chertsey Book Barn. The building is an old railway goods-shed. In earlier generations fertilizer, coal and bagged seeds would have been unloaded here, and wool and bagged grain loaded onto railway wagons for ports at Timaru or Lyttleton. Today it houses second hand books. The view at the door - half of it is stacked to the rafters with boxes of books Indoors is a kind of Aladdin's Cave Complete with Cobwebs (and a view of the rafters under that cavernous roof) If that isn't enough, I understand that all these containers are also packed to the gills with books Zag is part of the attraction and I left with a pile of rainy day reading material And I'll leave you with this verse from Sussex

A day in the life…

I wake her up before 7am every week day morning. I mean really she should be up, washed, dressed and making my porridge by then. She knows what time I'm going to arrive. Then I have to sit around doing 'morose' while she does that human washing thing, washes bits of fur she seems to have discarded, and eventually gets round to the porridge. My porridge has peanut butter and linseed flour in with the oats; so does hers but she adds stuff from so many other jars and bags before she eats hers that mine is gone and half digested before she starts eating. I climb onto the seat beside her and do a sneaky recce of her bowl - too many seeds, nuts, strange bits of fruit for my liking. What's wrong with a spoonful of yoghurt and a light sprinkle of K-A-T biscuits like I have? More morose hanging my head off the seat while I wait for the 'cup of tea' to be finished. Then I get excited and try to lick her face while she puts her boots on. "No lickies" means nothin...

Baking Repost - Mati's Scones

No 44 - Mati's Scones I have just been back home in NZ, and my niece Mati has taught me how to make scones her way. I won't say they are fail proof - I managed to fail a batch last Saturday morning (made the mix a bit wet and they were tasty and moist but a bit in the flat side) - but they are certainly easy and once you get the hang of the consistency to achieve before you bake them, they can become a quick and easy fresh baking response to unexpected visitors, or bored kids on a wet day.... Mati's Scones 400 grams self-raising flour 300ml cream 300ml lemonade Mix it together. Tip it onto a well greased baking tray (or baking sheet), pat it into shape and run a knife through it where you want it divided into scones. Bake 20 minutes of so in an oven pre-heated to 180 degrees C. Nature Friday - Old Man's Beard

Clematis vitalba Not a native plant, it has become quite invasive here (particularly in places like the trees lining Canterbury's braided river beds). Fergus helped me photograph examples along the Ashburton River. Old Man's Beard smothers everything right up to full canopy height in the tallest trees - you can also see it in the background (might need to bigify). You can read more about it here Individually those seed heads are a thing of wonder despite being such a destructive plant.

State of Emergency

Another flooding state of emergency has been declared in Nelson and parts of Marlborough. I drove south earlier in the week to get a different perspective on rain and have had three days in which to see the architect, get a haircut, buy some art for the cabin walls, pick up my mini plant nursery, and scavenge some rhubarb crowns, some hazelnut suckers, a small folding scaffolding thing, and a tool for ramming earth in postholes. I'd planned to return Friday, and then Saturday… and now Sunday. Rain's arrival was slightly later than predicted a week ago. Who wants to drive straight back into the weather they left home to avoid? Fergus won't mind and Scully's humans are on school holidays so she doesn't mind either. Meanwhile, despite there being a guest room available, I'm sleeping in the lounge - where there is a fireplace with all the sensations that entails (sound, light, scent, as well as heat). Who said "state of emergency"?
