Old bikes - the ones with fixed front to rear sprocket ratio (1 gear), back pedalling brakes, and swept back handlebars (the sort of handlebars elaborate moustaches were named after). No cables, no levers, no derailleur, no brake callipers (or disks) - these should in fact be the ultimate streamlined bike. Did you have one at any stage in your life? Did you ever fix a puncture on the back tyre? OK it's upside down, but that's the only reasonable way to get the wheel off. My workshop clamp doesn't work well on bikes with a low bar like that. First you have to tackle the rusted up bolt on the thing that stops the wheel moving backwards in the frame. Then you contemplate these doo-dads that stop it moving forward in the frame (which would loosen the chain). They too are rusted up. I finally got the nuts off the ends of the axle after two days soaking them in penetrating oil. And finally resorted to this which punches a rivet out of the chain (because it was easier than trying ...

Rump Lump

Fergus here. My humans got themselves in a bit of a tizz about a lump on my rump. Niece (as F calls her) was tasked with taking me to the V-E-T. V-E-T just laughed and described me as (whispers) fat! She called that lump my saddlebags. Niece (my boss) isn't exactly svelte herself and she just thought it was funny. F on the other hand suggested to me that perhaps we could go for walks in the evening. I like walks. It takes my mind off the fact that The Boss has cut my rations and the only treats I am allowed now are carrots. Fortunately I like carrots. F carries sliced carrots in her pockets. And just to prove the whole darned lot of them wrong, I ran the whole way: all the way into town, all the way around Argyle Park and all the way home. F ran some of it and fast walked the rest. I think she has got the message..... I'm all muscle. Oh come on woman... And it wasn't a one off. I get a run every day now. F calls it exercise and enrichment. I get so excited when she say...

Fields of Queen Anne's Lace

Fergus again - walks have also included rounds of the back paddocks at home. We have no sheep or cows for me to chase this year so it has all got long and meadowy. F asked my permission the share the Queen Anne's Lace with Rosie for her nature Friday Blog Hop. Permission granted. Note from F: A week or two back Madsnapper mentioned the juke box that plays in her head (and mine as it happens) where the selector is operated by some gremlin that acts on random prompts from speech, passing thoughts etc. You get to hate some of the tunes it plays. This however is one of my favorites and pops up whenever Queen Anne's Lace is the prompt " Put Down the Gun "

Hijacked

Mum wants to hijack my blog to publish a knitting pattern she has designed and written. I shouldn't let her do it but she isn't very tech savvy and she doesn't know how else to link it to her Ravelry account. She no longer has a blog of her own (deleted her old email address and locked herself out of the blog - stupid woman - but you can see the remnants of it here Mum's Baking Blog ) I'm making this as difficult as possible for her - sleeping with my face on the lefthand end of her keyboard. She has SHIFT and CTL on the other end but I have control of the letter A and my chin on the Caps Lock. She is very persistent, but she still hasn't worked out how to make it into a downloadable .pdf ( edit - oh yes she has Mr T -a lot can happen in 24 hours!) Oh alright then put it here but I disown the content from here on (unless there is money for catfood in it.......) pattern as .pdf file Koko Jacket and Hat Materials: 2 skeins Lanas Stop Norman...

Probiotics

I won't bore you with more photos - you know you are living in an agricultural support town when all roads into town are lined with tractor sales yards. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue.... no purple ones but one manufacturer did do a limited edition in pink apparently. I believe that it was actually a promotion to raise money for breast cancer research (not necessarily to appeal to Farmer Barbie.) Of course the tractors are arranged around an impressive array of 'implements' for every possible farming activity - also painted in red, orange, etc Across the road: Lucerne silage being baled in the afternoon. Overnight it was wrapped and in the morning it was being loaded to cart away. That stuff, being green (not dried like hay) is REALLY heavy. It ferments inside those packages so the livestock get a good dose of probiotics in their winter supplementary feed.
