Nature Friday

Sunshine changes things. I fell out of love with Blogger for a while. Deep breath in. I missed the interaction, the windows on other worlds Life here seems to have become very small. All focus is on the house build. Today some of the house roof is going on. The seasons have turned a corner. Orion appears in our night sky again - above our sunrise horizon just before the sky lights up. As we advance on this turn around the sun, Orion will start each night higher in the sky than on the previous until his final appearance on our sunset horizon heralds the onset of another Winter. Walking back from the jetty last week we were assailed by a strong scent. I traced it to a flowering acacia

Peasgood's Nonsuch

On our return from Chathams we had a day at Bro's place to sort out the transport of Mr B’s motorbike. Bro has an extensive garden and orchard from which I scavenged a bucketful of Black Doris plums (still clinging right at the top of the tree). I'd no sooner stowed those in the van when Bro pointed out the tree of cooking apples and said "take those with you. I still have some in jars from a couple of years ago." Peasgood's Nonsuch They are huge. Fortunately it's a small tree and birds had feasted on a few fruits so I only had 15 or so to carry away. They turn to fluff when heated gently. I have stowed most of the fluff in yoghurt pots in the freezer - to use in my porridge over winter - and put a few apples, with some of the excess ripe tomatoes we returned to, into a chutney. Bro also unloaded a 45 litre bag of walnuts (in shell) and 60 litres of hazelnuts (also unshelled) onto us. They were last year's harvest. No one at his home fancies the task of ...

Nature Friday - Thrives in a Difficult Garden

Acanthus mollis Also known as Bears Britches (breeches) and Oyster plant Now that I have really actually properly looked closely at it I can see where oyster plant came from. I still haven't worked out the Bear's Britches. Acanthus spicata And yes it is very spiky, but it does thrive in my difficult garden Purple Toad flax Toad flax is a Mediterranean plant and part of the plantain family. People actually pay money for the plants and seeds of this stuff. My observation is that once you have it in your garden - you have it in your garden. It's everywhere. (I believe the word is 'invasive'.) Heucheras - I rescued these from a compost heap at the allotments last year. A couple of dozen plants for free. Triteleia - Triplet Lilies It might be an over statement to say these thrive - but they have hung on through years of neglect, and tenant gardeners, and cats and rats and squirrels... Honeysuckle - this is a bit of an 'in memoriam'. I cut the h...

Charity Knitting

Hats. Hats for Hato Hone. (St John. The order of St John - first aiders and ambulance service - a lifeline (quite literally) for rural New Zealanders.) I buy books and yarn at various charity shops. Hato Hone is beside the laundromat at Springlands in Blenheim. Buy something, have a chat... "Do you knit hats? We can always sell hats." The thing about buying charity shop yarn bags is they always contain yarns I have no personal desire to wear - colours, fluff (texture), gauge (especially the bulky yarns). I sift out the part balls of double knit and 4-ply, sort the wool from the blends and acrylic, rebag the novelty yarns (ribbon yarn - that kind of thing - it goes straight back), set aside what I can use on my own projects and turn the rest into hats...
